All of the jewellery ordered online through our website is made-to-order specially for you. But for those of you who wish to have something a little bit different, this page answers some of the most common questions we get about personalising Sheila's jewellery. Please contact us at our workshop or speak to one of the team in our galleries if you'd like to find out more.
Please note: Any jewellery we adapt to your wishes or specially design for you cannot be returned to us or exchanged. Please make sure you are happy with your decision about the design, metal, stone, enamel colour, engraving and size when asking us to personalise jewellery.
Can I have my jewellery engraved?
A simple way to create an item of jewellery unique to you or a loved one is by having it engraved. We can machine-engrave many of our rings with initials, names and dates. Engraving costs £25 for a maximum of 14 characters (including spaces) and, if available for your chosen ring, can be selected before adding the ring to your shopping bag. If you would like a different piece of jewellery engraved, please contact us to discuss if this is possible. Please note that engraved jewellery cannot be returned or exchanged, as per our Returns Policy.
Can I choose a different metal?
Here at Sheila Fleet Jewellery we work with sterling silver, yellow, white and rose gold, and platinum, and many of these options are available on our website. We also make jewellery in rare and luxurious 18ct Scottish Gold.
The majority of Sheila's designs are available in silver or silver with enamel, but on request we can make your chosen design in an alternative precious metal. If you want a piece enamelled, please note that only our silver and 18ct gold designs can be enamelled.
Can I choose a different enamel colour?
Over the years Sheila has created a wide range of enamel colourways, from blues and greens, to oranges and reds. The colours available are those Sheila has selected to best suit the piece and her inspiration for the design. If an enamel colourway in a different design has appealed to you, however, it’s very likely we can specially enamel your chosen design in that colour.
Some of our enamel colours are harder to enamel than others on particular designs, but we will be able to advise on alternatives if this is the case. Please get in touch to discuss.
Can I request a bespoke enamel colour?
We offer a special service where we can match enamel colours to a special outfit, such as a wedding dress or bridesmaid dresses. We invite you to send us swatches of your wedding dress material, bridesmaids’ dresses and groom’s outfit.
If we do not already have a colourway to match, we can discuss creating a new enamel colourway at a small charge. Please note it is easier to achieve a close match with some colours than with others.
Can I choose a different gemstone?
Gemstones are a popular way to add a personal touch to your jewellery. Any design that has a stone setting can be hand-set with a different gemstone, and there are a variety of gemstones used throughout Sheila's collections. For example, our silver Tidal ring, which is normally set with a blue topaz or moonstone, could instead be set with an amethyst.
Can my own gemstone be set in a design?
It is certainly possible for us to set your own gemstone within one of our designs, but this will depend on the type and size of the stone. If you are looking to source a particular stone to be set, we would recommend that you get in touch with us as we may be able to help.
Many customers contact us with stones already-set in old rings, or other items of jewellery, that they would like to repurpose. We are happy to discuss any ideas you may have and advise on possible options.
Can I commission a bespoke design?
Sheila is kept busy throughout the year developing and launching new collections. Commissions are more difficult to take on due to time constraints, but please do get in touch with Martin if you have an idea you’d like to discuss. We’ll be delighted to work with you if it is something we can develop, but if we're unable to help we'll try to recommend another reputable local company.
Are you able to use the metal from an old piece of jewellery in one of your designs?
We can’t melt down your existing jewellery for many reasons, but can instead upcycle the metal. Sheila has created an old-to-new Standing Stones design that can incorporate metal from your existing jewellery.
Old rings work best for this, but sometimes other items of jewellery can be used. The metal is rolled and manipulated allowing it to be cut into shapes that represent Orkney's Neolithic Standing Stones. These shapes are then placed on a contrasting metal. For example, for a ring we would use a white gold band if your metal was yellow gold.
We can offer rings, pendants, earrings and cufflinks using this technique; keeping the sentimental value while creating something new. If you're interested in doing something similar with your existing jewellery, please get in touch to discuss prices and timescales.
