Thinking of visiting Orkney? With so many points of interest and beautiful beaches you’re spoilt for choice. But where to start; especially if you’re just on the island for a whistle-stop tour!

The Sheila Fleet team have put together a collection of ‘must see’ places to be ticked off on any trip to Orkney; here’s what we had to say:

Louise, who is our graphic designer and manages the website:

Rackwick

“Rackwick on the island of Hoy is, for me, the most beautiful place in Orkney; with stunning red sandstone cliffs, a boulder-strewn beach and a picturesque walk up to the Old Man of Hoy. A must visit for anyone who wants to see the iconic sea stack or just want to enjoy the idyllic surroundings.”

Stromness

“Another standout place to visit is The Pier Arts Centre, situated in the picturesque harbour town of Stromness. The gallery houses an outstanding collection of modern art in buildings which really compliment the collections. It’s free to visit and a great place for children to explore, we are lucky to have such a special place.”

Martin, who is the managing director of Sheila Fleet:

“For me it has to be St Magnus Cathedral with the warmth of the red sandstone this beautiful building is simply breathtaking, I love it every time I go in or see it. Mairi and I also got married there so it holds special memories for us.

St. Magnus Cathedral

“For families with young children I would recommend the Broch of Gurness; it’s one of the few settlements from the past which you can explore unhindered which makes it great for kids!

“For lovers of art, the Hoxa Tapestry Gallery is full of amazing, colourful tapestries that tell a story by Leila Thomson, sister of Sheila! It’s definitely worth a visit.”

Westray

Margaret, who sends your jewellery:

“My favourite thing about Orkney is the uninterrupted views of the landscape and the dramatic sunrises and sunsets which are accessible from almost anywhere on the islands.

“The island of Westray is particularly special to me; it’s a beautiful island with stunning beaches and a welcoming community. Westray is a great place to go to relax and unwind and enjoy some beautiful walks and view the diverse wildlife.”
