NEW Sheila Fleet Kirkwall Shop Update!
Sep 6, 2024
After two years of working behind-the-scenes on our new Kirkwall Gallery location, we thought it ...
It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday 26th March. Over the years Sheila has asked some of the mums and daughters who work with her to model for Mother’s Day. We’ve had lots of fun, plenty of smiles, a few retakes and some really lovely pictures. Here are a few of our favourites for you, full of love and with some jewellery too!
Holly and mum Paula modelled Creel for us when this collection was new. Holly is studying in Edinburgh now and works in the Stockbridge Gallery with Denise and her team at the weekend. She still helps us out in the Kirkwall Gallery when she’s home on holiday. Sheila’s late husband, Rick, took this picture just below the Workshop. The colour of the enamel, Storm, matched the colour of the sea that day…
In 2013 Sheila designed and made the Snowdrop collection, a beautiful collection inspired by Spring’s first flowers. Kath and her two daughters, Dawn and Tina, kindly modelled for us the following year. Kath worked in the Kirkwall Gallery for many years and is now busy as a tour guide, welcoming visitors to Orkney. Sheila is planning some new Snowdrop pieces in enamel and 18ct yellow gold – watch this space!
Mum Fiona and daughter Leanne (photo on left) are stalwarts of the Sheila Fleet team. Fiona works at Sheila Fleet HQ in Tankerness while Leanne is in the Kirkwall Gallery. If you have any queries both have a wealth of knowledge. They are both wearing one of Sheila’s most enduringly popular collections, Morning Dew, created in silver with crystal enamel and inspired by wild grasses glistening with dew as the sun rises.
You may recognise Britt with her mother Christine in the photo on the right. Britt has modelled for us on various occasions. She modelled the Swallows collection she is wearing when it first came out and later also modelled Snowdrop. Her mum, Christine, worked with us in Tankerness before leaving to devote more time to her drawing and painting. We held an exhibition of her work in the Kirkwall Gallery last summer. This is perhaps a case of mother following daughter as Britt is an accomplished artist and illustrator. Christine is wearing Sheila’s statement Tidal Island necklet.
Last but not least, one windy, bracing day in Spring, Martin whisked Mairi, little Hamish and Sheila to the Churchill Barriers and took some photos of his own mum and his little son’s mum for our 2015 Mother’s Day blog. The wind may have been cold but their smiles are warm. Sheila chose to wear her charitable Daisy design. All our Daisies contribute to the Orkney Charitable Trust supporting Orkney youngsters in need.
This year Sheila has chosen to show her new Lunar Pearl design in honour of all mothers. Created in silver the Mill Sands enamel is inspired by the colours of Mill Sands beach below her house and Workshop.
“The enamel colours reflect shoreline grasses, pink clover and sand with a handset pearl creating a wee gem in the centre. You can find mussel pearls around the coastline of Orkney. All these soft natural colours are very pleasing and easy to wear”.
Sheila, Martin, Mairi and all the Sheila Fleet team wish you a very happy Mother’s Day.
